Description
Quebec, 1805. Bernard-Antoine Panet, the eldest son of his illustrious family, has just completed his training with his father and is practicing as a lawyer in the capital. During a stay in Montreal, he meets Harriet Antill, whom he quickly plans to marry. However, when he marries the young Anglican widow, he finds himself rejected by the Catholics and soon has no more causes to defend. The young jurist decides to move to Montreal, where Harriet owns a beautiful home, to try to rebuild his name there. In addition to land purchased on the edge of the city, Bernard-Antoine has inherited half of the seigneury of Bourg-Louis from his father, where he dreams of reigning. But because of his debts, his portion of the lot must soon be put up for auction. It is thanks to his mother's influence that he manages to keep his share of this land for the first time, then a second time through the intervention of his wife. Later, back in Quebec, he now earns his living as a coroner. Despite his many setbacks, he does not give up and maintains his goal of developing his estate and settling there. Will the Panets finally achieve the status of seigneurs that they have coveted for decades?
