A soldier in the English army in the recently conquered New France, Alexander Macdonald cannot possibly remain with Isabelle, the French Canadian woman he loves so much. The twists and turns of fate have ensured that, despite their passionate feelings for each other, everything cruelly and inexorably divides them.
This impossible love condemns Alexander to being nothing more than a wandering soul. Fleeing this woman he is forbidden to covet, he finds himself, despite himself, sailing in unknown lands, in the Pays d'en Haut, to meet another people, another life, another companion...
But the memory of Isabelle haunts him day and night. Not for a single moment, since the laws of man separated them, has he forgotten her. Torn by the need to return to the one whose absence consumes him, will he end up leaving the tribe that adopted him? Will he go down the river to discover that certain promises remain forever engraved on the walls of the heart of the one he loves?
