Thorns and roses

Description

Paris, 1948

Elena Kaminski survived the worst horrors of the Nazi concentration camps, and she still bears the scars. At eighteen, the orphan works as a maid at the prestigious Hotel Lutetia. Soon intoxicated by a promise of eternal love, she sails to Quebec on the arm of Théodore Beaupré, a soldier she met in a moment of hope.

Far from the ruins of her past, she builds a home for herself. But her certainties vanish when tragedies strike without warning and beloved faces disappear. Lena finds solace in a few life-saving friendships, then in crafting dolls, which she shapes one by one, like a tenuous thread connecting her to what she has lost. It is by revisiting her torments that she finally understands the magnitude of the journey she has undertaken. Between pain and rebirth, Lena reveals herself as the very embodiment of resilience. After so many battles and new beginnings, the thorns no longer trouble her. They simply accompany the roses that line her path…
