Seventeen-year-old Jeanne-Mance Thibeault is studying at the Bon-Pasteur Normal School, hoping to earn her teaching certificate. But a surprise summons to the superior’s office upends her plans: her father has suffered a severe stroke. Rushed home, she soon finds a weakened man and a struggling cheese factory that her mother is barely keeping afloat.
