At the height of the economic crisis, fourteen-year-old Jeanne Labrie loses her job as a maid. Left to fend for herself in a home riddled with poverty, she must provide for her family after the tragic death of her mother. But when her scoundrel of a stepfather decides to marry her, Jeanne is forced to flee. Disguised as a boy, she takes to the streets with two orphaned friends. Together, they hop from train to train in search of work and dignity. One day, they encounter a kind peasant couple who give them a chance to rebuild their lives. Jeanne, however, cannot forget those she left behind. To provide her siblings with shelter and food, she is ready to make any sacrifice, even facing the cruelty of her grandparents, who agree to take them in. Despite adversity, she strives to make the family farm prosper, inspiring plans that match her ambitions. However, like the river that conceals dark secrets, the land and its ruthless owners do not yield easily…
