Description
To be a Québécois in 1936 meant committing oneself: to the left or to the right, for independence or for the status quo. Women were also concerned, especially with contraception at a time when widespread poverty was killing so many children. Everyone placed their greatest hopes in the Union Nationale, which had just come to power, but already, disappointment was spreading.
Then there are the intimate battles, to find one's place and maintain it. Thalie always gets tangled up in her love affairs. At the risk of social ostracism, and even criminal prosecution, she is involved in "preventing family." Béatrice dreams of becoming a psychologist, perhaps to heal her own wounds, while also wanting to forge ties with Jacques Létourneau, her half-brother. Charles Dupire, for his part, is passionate about all new political adventures.
Mathieu's business, now director of the family store, is doing well despite the lingering crisis. Édouard, meanwhile, is desperately trying to get back on his feet. His audacity leads him to try to close deals with Duplessis himself.
