While some trembled at the thought of their loved ones being forcibly recruited into the army, others volunteered. Whatever their motivations, obscure and hidden for some, bright and courageous for others, all plunged their loved ones into anguish and waiting.

Despite his young age, Thomas Jr. hoped to wash away the family's tarnished honor, sullied by his father's cowardice in the previous conflict. Jacques Létourneau, the adopted child, was searching for himself. Thalie, for her part, suffered from the emptiness of her existence, for which she knew she was solely responsible. And while her cousins fought in Europe, the shy Beatrice resolutely pursued her destiny, even if it meant exiling herself to the United States…
