An investigation by Eugene Dolan: You Shall Not Desire the Works of the Flesh

Description

On the first day of summer in 1912, the Dolan household is in a flurry of activity. Thanks to her brother Kenneth's generosity, Éléonore will spend the entire summer in Métis-sur-Mer with her daughter, Isobel, enjoying the sea air. Dolan, for his part, will join them on weekends. But in this idyllic setting, passions simmer beneath the surface.

Judge Paul Lavergne has taken time off from work to also relax in Métis with his sullen-looking grown daughter, Clotilde, and his second wife, Blanche, who is barely older than the teenager. Despite her name, which evokes all virtues, Blanche is having a torrid affair with an American vacationer. And to complicate matters further, a college student feigns an interest in Clotilde to be near her stepmother.

Since the honorable judge one day ends up with two bullets in his head, Dolan will ultimately spend a little more time than expected in Métis. He now has on his hands the corpse of a notable and a few suspects: a woman ill-suited to her husband, a transient lover, a smitten student, the close relative of a hanged man, and a teenager who resents her father terribly for having made such a bad marriage.
